SDG4U: A lasting legacy for Higher Education’s Sustainable future

As the project SDG4U – Engaging SDGs for Transformative Education and Enhanced Sustainability in Universities project approaches its conclusion, its impact on higher education across Europe stands out as a powerful legacy of innovation, collaboration, and transformational learning.

Funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme and implemented over 36 months (December 2022 – December 2025), SDG4U has been a strategic effort to embed the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the core functions of universities — from teaching and research to campus operations and community outreach.

Advancing Sustainability in teaching and learning

A cornerstone of the project’s legacy is an innovative online SDGs Mapping Tool. This platform enables universities to assess, visualize, and strengthen how sustainability is integrated across curricula and academic offerings. By mapping existing modules, courses, and research activities against SDGs, the tool equips educators and institutions with actionable insights for curriculum enhancement long after the project ends.

Complementing this technological contribution, SDG4U has produced new academic modules, pedagogical materials, and interdisciplinary seminars designed to empower both faculty and students with the knowledge and competencies needed to advance sustainability in higher education. These resources are intended to spread gradually across institutions, influencing teaching practices and institutional strategies beyond the original project partners.

Empowering educators and students

Throughout its implementation, SDG4U placed strong emphasis on capacity building. Training initiatives — including “Train the Trainers” seminars and awareness-raising events hosted by partner universities — equipped academic staff with pedagogical tools to embed SDGs into course design and classroom practice. Students, too, benefited from interactive learning experiences such as workshops and hackathons that encouraged creative problem solving on sustainability challenges. By fostering sustainability citizenship among faculty, students, and staff, the project has helped cultivate future leaders who carry forward a deep commitment to ethical, equitable, and environmentally responsible education.

Inspiring a culture of Sustainability across campuses

Beyond tools and training, SDG4U’s legacy includes a broad awareness campaign, displayed in all partner countries through many impactful events, inspirational case collection, and a set of scientific outcomes and resources tailored for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

A forward-looking impact

These outputs highlight practical examples and pathways for universities to integrate sustainable practices into campus operations, research agendas, and partnerships with local communities. Moreover, by bringing together a diverse consortium — including the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (coordinator), Panteion University, University College Cork, University of Murcia, The American College of Greece, and UNIMED – Mediterranean Universities Union — the project has reinforced pan-European collaboration toward shared sustainability goals.

As SDG4U concludes, its legacy extends far beyond the project timeline. The tools, materials, networks, and cultural shifts it has fostered will continue to support universities in aligning with the SDGs, shaping curricula, and preparing graduates equipped to address global challenges. In an era where transformative education and sustainability are increasingly intertwined, SDG4U leaves a blueprint for universities committed to creating sustainable and equitable futures for all.
